Intermittent Fasting: Is It Right for Indian Diets?

By Dt. Anjali Verma 01 May 2026 4 min read

Intermittent fasting works for some people, but it isn't automatically the best fit for every Indian household — especially where meals are shared, timed around family schedules, or built around three cooked meals a day rather than grazing.

The core idea — a defined eating window rather than round-the-clock snacking — can genuinely help some people eat less without counting every calorie. But skipping breakfast to hit a 16:8 window doesn't work well for someone with a physically demanding job, a history of low blood sugar, or an early gym schedule.

A more realistic approach for many Indian households is a gentler 12-hour overnight fast — finishing dinner earlier and not eating late at night — which delivers a lot of the same benefit without the same disruption.

Like most diet trends, IF is a tool, not a rule. Whether it fits depends on your routine, your health history and what you can actually sustain — not on what's trending.
