Post-Pregnancy Weight Loss: A Realistic Timeline
Social media sets unrealistic expectations around postpartum weight loss, and it does new mothers a real disservice. The body needs time to recover from pregnancy and delivery, and for anyone breastfeeding, adequate nutrition matters more than a fast timeline.
A realistic, healthy pace is roughly half a kilo to a kilo a week, starting only after the initial 6-week recovery period and once breastfeeding (if applicable) is well established. Rushing this — through very low calorie diets or skipping meals — can affect milk supply and energy levels at exactly the time a new mother needs both.
The first priority postpartum is actually nutrient-dense eating to support recovery and, if breastfeeding, milk production. Weight loss becomes the secondary, gradual goal once that foundation is in place — usually over 6 to 12 months, not 6 weeks.
Every body and every delivery is different, which is exactly why a personalised timeline, not a generic one, makes the difference.
